Bennati Takes Stage Three at Tirreno-Adriatico Daniele Bennati (Liquigas Doimo) took the bunch sprint at the end of Tirreno-Adriatico’s third stage. Bennati out sprinted Alessandro Petacchi (Lampre-N.G.C.) and Bernhard Eisel (HTC-Columbia) and in doing so gave his team its second win of the day, following Peter Sagan’s win at Paris-Nice. Garmin-Transitions’ Tyler Farrar was fourth ahead of Juan Antonio Flecha (Team Sky).
Bennati now takes over the general classification ahead of Linus Gerdemann (Milram).
The stage, from San Miniato to Monsummano Terme was 159km long was run under cold but dry conditions. Because the stage ran through the home town of Franco Ballerini, the national team coach who died in a rally car accident last month, Bennati dedicated his win to him.

“Now I have the jersey, but Saturday’s stage will be very difficult. To begin with, it is very long, at 220 kilometers and several riders will show their ambitions when they attack.
The riders to which Contador refers are numerous. His three greatest threats are Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d’Epargne), currently in second at 20 seconds, Roman Kreuziger (Liquigas Doimo) at 25 seconds and Luis Leon Sanchez (Caisse d’Epargne) at 26 seconds. However, eight riders, including today’s stage winner, Peter Sagan (Liquigas Doimo), are within a minute of Contador.
Of 20-year-old stage winner Sagan Contador said, “Peter Sagain is an incredible rider. Surely we will soon see him in other races where he will become a rival to control.”
