ZAP: POST VEGAS RUMBLINGS & SILCA PUMP GIVE-AWAY
October 25, 2010

As you may have heard, the folks at Interbike had announced that the biggest U.S. bicycle show would be moving from Las Vegas back to Anaheim next year. Besides the change in locale, they also trumpeted a move from September to early August. Not. Within days of the breaking news came another version of breaking news - the show was actually now going to stay in Las Vegas with the September date. Oh well. The biggest drag is that they also nix'd the consumer day they were planning to have.

No matter what, it seems that no Interbike trade show goes by without me sticking my foot in my mouth (like once railing against people who live in gated communities to Dean Bradley who happened to live in a gated community) or just plain doing something stupid...which is what I did this year. There we was, RBA ace shooter John Ker and I frantically trying to bang out the last few bike shots in the closing hours of the show. One of the last photos we had to get was over at the Look booth. As JK zero'd in on the sweet Mondrian 695 there was this elderly gent in the booth who kinda kept backing into the shot. In a rather brusque manner, I simultaneously asked the guy to move while sorta moving him aside. Somewhat shocked, he looked over at me, "Excuse me?!" I hurriedly replied, "trying to get a shot here!"

As John was snapping away, in the corner of my eye I could see the guy getting a tad upset and talking to the Look rep while pointing at me. Soon enough he began walking in our direction...."uh oh" I thought as I started to think about what might happen next.

Well, it turns out that the guy was not just any "old guy", but was in fact Look's Director General, Thierry Fournier. You know, Director General as in Big Man On Campus, El Patron, the Boss, the guy who could probably singlehandedly keep me out of France next July! Oops! Luckily, Mr. Fournier was very kind and said that if I had plans to do something nice with the photos John was shooting, I could brush him out of the way any old time. Well, did Mr. Fournier get his way with me? Look for our expansive show coverage in the soon-to-arrive spectacular December issue to find out.

The Song Of The Week.

KANSAS BOB'S ON THE ROAD AGAIN CHECKLIST

This is the way that I prepare for a road trip:
* Road Bike?  Under the blanket.
* Tool Box?  Near the back seat.
* Gear Bag? Yup!
* 16 cases of Charles Shaw's finest Cabernet?  Oh Yeah!!
* A nice selection of Whites just for the Ladies?  Of Course!
* Cork Screw? Cork Screw?!?  Oh No!

Kansas Bob Quote From the Road:
"Well you know, I have enough white wine with me I'm hoping it might help attract a young muse to help me out with my photos!"

And then somewhere out in Colorado, Bob found this...

the actual 7-Eleven team bike used by Davis Phinney to win the final Coors Classic race back in 1988. "The guy who owns it is a little secretive about it, but he likes wine so I'm hoping after a few bottles of my Cabernet he'll grow more compliant and spill the beans!"

On The Road To Vegas
Accompanying me on the highway to Vegas was RBA grom Michael White and as we made the five hour drive the poor kid was assaulted with one mixed CD of mine after another. I couldn't help but think back to my hours in a car with Chris Henry listen to his mixed CD's while chasing the Tour de France last summer. Of course I was worse off than Michael due to Chris' predilection for all that whimpy jazz fusion stuff he prefers. Michael on the other hand was getting a quality schooling with The Clash, Muddy Waters, The Cramps, Stiff Little Fingers and Southern Culture On the Skids.
