FEATURES: ASK RC: SILENCING WHEELS
Richard Cunningham
June 23, 2010
(Photo: Roberto Bettini)
I have recently started riding Campagnolo Bora Ultras and have Vittoria Corsa EVO CX tires. The wheels require valve extensions. I have noticed that the valve stems knock the side of the hole in the rims when I ride out the saddle going up a hill. Currently I am using a ½ inch of electrical tape with a small hole in it over the valve stem and secured to the rim, but it doesn’t always hold it still. Can you make any suggestions how to eliminate this please?
– Guy
Isn’t that the most annoying thing? I think that it’s the luck of the draw. If you install the tube or tubular with the valve stem slightly off center, it wedges against the sides of the rim’s valve hole and remains silent – but it you get the valve stem perfectly centered, it taps on the rim with each revolution of the wheel. AAAAAAAAAHRG! I also use electrical tape, but there has to be a better solution. If anyone has a better solution I'd love to hear it.
