Edge Composites Is Now ENVE Edge Composites, manufacturer of elite carbon fiber bicycle rims and components, has announced their new company and brand name as ENVE Composites. Effective September 1st, the new name and associated collateral will be introduced at Eurobike. Ownership, management and staff will remain the same.
Trademark issues in Europe have been problematic for the three year-old company. Founder Jason Schiers said, "When we started the company three years ago, we were focused mainly on gaining a foothold in the domestic market. We were Engineers, Designers and Cyclists, and frankly, we didn't consider checking for trademark registrations outside of the U.S. Obviously our reputation overseas has outgrown this mindset and it has become an issue recently." Schiers added that they had an opportunity for a license agreement in Europe but opted against it, advising "We have actually established a great relationship with the current trademark holder in Europe and, regardless of the fact that there will be no license agreement between us, there is a strong likelihood that we will discuss a future collaboration."
Chairman Paul Lehman cited a confluence of factors affecting the decision, primarily the opportunity created by recent developments in engineering. "In the past few months we started construction on a new 20,000 square foot state-of-the-art composite facility and are announcing a major partnership with one of the top aerodynamic specialists in the world that we collectively believe will change the way bicycle wheels are designed. So much great stuff has happened that we really feel like we are a new company and so, what better time to launch a new name to go with it?"
"We have made a conscious decision to focus our energy and resources on new product development and we're really comfortable with that, plus we really like the new name. It signifies a start of a new direction and an evolution of our products. We have spent the last year creating some exciting improvements to our product line that you will get to see and ride in the year ahead," Lehman added.

Team Type 1 Announces First Of New Signings Team Type 1 has announced the first of several new rider signings as it pursues pro continental status for the 2011 season.
Rubens Bertogliati becomes the first Swiss rider to join the world's only professional cycling team with riders who have Type 1 diabetes. Bertogliati is best known for his win in Stage 1 of the 2002 Tour de France, where he attacked in the final kilometer and narrowly held off the charging pack in Luxembourg. The victory earned him the race lead and the coveted maillot jaune for two days.
Team Type 1 Founder and CEO Phil Southerland said the 31-year-old is a veteran all-around who will vie for stage wins while helping the team's younger riders learn the ropes in Europe.
"Most importantly, he is a great guy, and is motivated for strong results," Southerland said. "We are excited to have the current (and two-time) Swiss national time trial champion on the team, and hopeful that his victories to come will help spread the message of taking control of your diabetes in Switzerland."
Bertogliati is also a past Swiss national road champion (2009) and a multi-time finisher of the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia. Racing for Team Type 1 presents a new challenge, he said.
"The fact that the team has its goal to show people with diabetes that they can achieve big things gives me additional motivation to get results," Bertogliai said. "I am very happy to be part of a young and highly motivated team. I always wanted to combine my sporting career with a significant social purpose, so I am grateful to Team Type 1 for giving me this possibility."
Southerland will introduce Bertogliati to Team Type 1's title sponsor, sanofi-aventis Diabetes, Thursday night at a presentation in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland.
Team Type 1 Director Sportif Vassili Davidenko said Bertogliati has yet to realize his potential. In this year's Giro, Bertogliati finished second on Stage 6 while primarily riding in support on Michele Scarponi on the Androni Giocattoli-Serramenti PVC Diquigiovanni team.
"On many occasions in his career, he has been riding in the service of someone else," Davidenko said. "But we will be able to provide him with a program where he's the leader on the road. He's a complete rider."
Bertogliati has been a professional since 2000. He has previously ridden for the Lampre (2000-2003), Saunier Duval-Prodir (2004-2007) and Scott-American Beef (2008) squads.www.teamtype1.org
Sutherland to help celebrate author’s return to the road
A year ago, Carlsbad, CA- based author John Miksa was out riding along the Pacific coast when he was hit head-on by a car. The UnitedHealthcare subscriber sustained major damage to his C-5 and C-6 vertebrae, and was given just a 1% chance of recovery.
And yet, this Friday, August 27, he’ll celebrate the one-year anniversary of the accident – and his amazing recovery – with a ride from La Jolla to Encinitas.
Former San Diego resident Rory Sutherland of the UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team Presented by Maxxis will accompany Miksa on the 15-mile ride, along with doctors from Scripps Health and UnitedHealthcare employees.
“As professional cyclists, we work hard to overcome challenges to get to the level we’re at and to win races,” Sutherland said. “But all the work we do is nothing compared to the courage John has shown to get to this point. I’m honored to help celebrate this achievement.”
The ride will begin around 9:30 PT at the Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, and conclude about an hour later at the Scripps Memorial Hospital in Encinitas, where they’ll enjoy a post-ride celebration.
Dario Goes To The Big Screen August 27th is the final installment in our film series with RSA Films. As with the others, this film will only be available on the Rapha homepage for 24 hours. With Dario Pegoretti as the subject, this film is a unique and concise exploration of a man that has continually been a subject within the cycling community. Compared to the narrative structure of the previous two films this one is more of a documentary take on this famous framebuilder from Italy. There are some great humorous moments that delve into the tortured and charismatic personality of Pegoretti. Head to Rapha Performance.
Univest Grand Prix Seeks Course Marshals, Event Volunteers Opportunities Abound To Get Involved in Major International Cycling Event The Univest Grand Prix is seeking volunteers to serve as course marshals and event staff for North America’s most prestigious Pro-Am cycling event to be held Saturday, Sept. 11 in Souderton and Sunday, Sept. 12 in Doylestown.
Course marshal volunteers will assist police and fire police in crowd and traffic control along the dynamic new 5.8 Univest Grand Prix course in Souderton, Telford and Franconia on Saturday and on the 1.4 mile race course around the perimeter of the annual Arts Festival in Doylestown on Sunday. Event staff volunteers are needed to assist with the Cyclosportif recreational ride on Saturday morning in Souderton, banner set-up and tear-down before and after the races and registration assistance at race-related activities on both days.
“The major strength of the Univest Grand Prix has always been the deep community support for the event,” said race organizer John Eustice, president of Sparta Cycling Inc. “The new course for the Souderton race and Cyclosportif ride will provide a front-line view of a great international bike race, the chance to interact with fans and the opportunity to be part of the wonderful team that makes this race possible every year.”
Course marshals will be asked to serve from approximately 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the race on Saturday to keep the course clear of vehicles, pedestrians, spectators and debris and serve as ambassadors to the fans gathered along the course. Course captains will be responsible five to 10 intersections and marshals on race day to ensure appropriate coverage and communications. Food, drinks, event shirts and breaks from duty will be provided to volunteers.
Sunday’s course marshals and captains are asked to serve from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Course marshals and volunteers are also needed from 8 to 10 a.m. to assist with the Cyclosportif - a fund raiser that benefits the Penn Foundation in Sellersville. Volunteers will serve in the Feed Zone for the Cyclosportif along the 3.8 mile Finishing Loop in Souderton to help riders refill water bottles and provide food to help them finish the ride. Opportunities are also available for volunteers at the Hospitality Tents in Souderton and Doylestown and other volunteer opportunities are available on both days.
This is an ideal opportunity for service groups, youth organizations, church congregations and others to attain volunteer hours while ensuring the success of a great community tradition. Best of all, it’s fun!
“I love to get the rush of adrenalin as the Univest Grand Prix bikers come by me, wherever my post is that day, and the bikers and cars who follow them give me a huge thumbs up for showing them the correct direction to go,” said Emilie Lauchmen of Harleysville, who has been serving as a course marshal since 2004. “I would definitely recommend volunteering for the Univest Grand Prix. Just being a small part of such a big event is rewarding.” For more information or to register as a volunteer, please go to: www.spartacycling.com/univestgp/volunteers.html. |
