THE STORY
There has been a lot of buzz about Focus Bicycles coming into the U.S. market, and after testing the Izalco in our December 2009 issue, we know why. The remarkably tangible, intense and, yes, “focused” brand seems to offer great value and performance at a wide range of price-points with some German, need-for-speed attributes thrown in. The Culebro is another example of the new kid at school charm—a sharp-looking aluminum bike, with an almost sandy, matte-finish and artistic graphics.
THE BIKE
The Focus Culebro begins with a hydroformed, triple-butted, aluminum frame that is beautifully TIG-welded using a special technique which smooths the tube junctions. The frame features tapered seat stays, an oversized downtube, an ovalized top tube and a tapered head tube with matching carbon fork. Shimano Ultegra takes care of the shifting responsibilities, powered by an FSA SLK-Light triple crankset (52/39/30), and a Concept saddle, seatpost and handlebar. Fulcrum Racing 7 wheels with Continental Ultra Sport tires add an impressive wheel story to the well-appointed Culebro.
THE RIDE
Focus hit the mark with the Culebro frame geometry and spec. Its handlebar has a deeper bend, the stem is generously long and its Shimano Ultegra controls rest in the hands like Dura-Ace. With lively feeling Fulcrum wheels fitted to its beautifully crafted aluminum frame, the Culebro handles and accelerates like an integrated whole—the kind of feel that we expect from a pro-level race bike. At 20 pounds, the Focus’ weight can be felt when climbing any significant grade, and this is where the FSA triple crankset comes into play. Should the grade overpower your legs, drop down to the 30-tooth bail-out chainring and spin your way to the top. Focus further takes advantage of the FSA triple crankset by spec’ing a closely spaced 12x25 cassette, which gives the Culebro club-racer gearing in the 52 and 39 chainrings. All things considered, Focus hits the mark for enthusiast-level cyclists, Ragbrai riders and club racers on a budget. The Culebro gives experienced cyclists a pro-bike feel and offers entry-level riders palpable performance features that they will later appreciate when they grow into their game.
