TECH NEWS: TIM JOHNSON’S CYCLOCROSSWORLD.COM CANNONDALE
September 20, 2008

The 2008 Cyclocross season kicks off this weekend with the Full Speed Ahead Star Crossed race in Redmond, Washington. Before the racing started Road Bike Action got a chance to take an up close look at National Champion Tim Johnson’s cyclocrossworld.com Cannondale.

Johnson’s bike features his own XTJ signature frame that uses Cannondale’s cyclocross CAAD9 frame technology with a BB30 bottom bracket shell. Johnson’s bike features a striking red, white and blue paint scheme in recognition of his 2007 National Championship. Up front Johnson relies on a full carbon Easton EC90X fork to keep the bike pointed in the desired direction. SRAM Red components handle the shifting, while ultra light TRP carbon cantilever brakes handle the stopping duties. The SRAM Red group features carbon Double Tap shift levers, carbon crankset, ceramic bottom bracket bearings and Red’s most unique feature the PowerDome cassette. What makes the cassette different is that it is made through a process in which the top eight cogs are machined out from a single piece of steel. The single piece is then mated to two floating cogs to complete the 10-speed cassette. To keep his bike rolling fast and smooth Johnson relies of a set of Mavic Cosmic Carbone Ultimate tubular wheels.

The Mavic Cosmic Carbone Ultimate tubular wheels are one of the most impressive pieces of equipment on Johnson’s bike. The Cosmic Carbone Ultimate wheels feature full carbon rims and Mavic’s R2R spoke design for increased strength and stiffness. The 40-millimeter rim, and profiled carbon spokes help reduce drag, while rear wheel includes adjustable bearings and truing system to allow for serviceability between races. A set of Mavic Cosmic Carbon Ultimate wheels weigh an incredible 1185-grams a set.

The rest of Johnson’s bike is made up of an aluminum ControlTech stem, handlebar, carbon seatpost and fizik Aliante saddle. Johnson is currently using Shimano XTR pedals, but will be switching to Mavic’s new mountain bike pedals when they become available. Johnson’s careful selections of components, combined with his signature frame, come together to create a lightweight and reliable racing machine.
