Trebon (shown here at the fifth round of the USGP) took his second US National Title
The US National Cyclocross Championship in Kansas City started with warm temperatures that hovered in the mid-sixties, but by the time the elite races had started the temperatures had dropped to near freezing. In the men’s race Ryan Trebon (Kona), Tim Johnson (cyclocrossworld.com/Cannondale), Jeremy Powers cyclocrossworld.com/Cannondale), Todd Wells (GT), Jonathan Page (Planet Bike/Blue), Jesse Anthony (Jamis), and Jamey Driscoll (cyclocrossworld.com/Cannondale) all came in as possible winners.
On the first lap Trebon, Johnson, Page. Anthony, Wells, and Powers had established a gap over the rest of the field, with a chase group of Barry Wicks (Kona) and Driscoll close behind.
From the chase group Driscoll and Wicks were able to bridge to the front. Going into the third lap the front group contained Trebon, Page, Johnson, Driscoll, Anthony, and Wicks, with Powers struggling and dropping off the back.
From the front group Wells, Page, Anthony and Trebon took turns attacking. With four laps to go Trebon launched a vicious attack that only Driscoll could answer. At first his gap was small at only 3 seconds, but Trebon kept on the pressure and the gap began to grow.
Behind Trebon and Driscoll the lead group began to break apart with Page and Anthony breaking free from the rest of the group. Johnson and Wells maintained their positions despite having been dropped while Powers and Wicks would end up fading in the cold conditions.
With four laps to go Trebon was able to open a five seconds gap over Driscoll. Once Trebon had a gap he drilled it, using his power to open his gap and holding it all the way to the line. Behind the victorious Trebon, Driscoll held off a late charging Page for second while Anthony finished fourth and 2007 National Champion Johnson took fifth.
This is the second national cyclocross title for Trebon.
In the women’s race reigning national champion Katie Compton (Spike) rode a dominating race to take her fifth national title. Compton rode off the front on the group on the first lap, putting 10-seconds between her and Georgia Gould (Luna) by the start of the second lap.
After the first lap the top three positions never changed. By the bell lap Compton had 30-seconds on Gould with Rachel Lloyd a further 10 seconds back. The gaps held all the way to line with Compton easily taking the win. US Cyclocross Nationals 1. Ryan Trebon, Kona 2. Jamey Driscoll cyclocrossworld.com/Cannondale 3. Jonathan Page, Planet Bike-Blue
