RACE REPORTS: TREBON WINS FINAL USGP, JOHNSON TAKES SERIES
December 7, 2008

The overall series podium: Trebon, Johnson and Wells

The rain came with a vengeance for the final round of the Crank Brothers U.S. Grand Prix of Cyclocross. On a wet and muddy course, Ryan Trebon (Kona) made up for a disappointing round 5 to take an impressive solo victory. Andy Jacques-Maynes (California Giant Berry) took the holeshot, but it was Tim Johnson cyclocrossworld.com/Cannondale that broke the race apart on the first lap with a strong opening lap. Johnson’s team Jeremy Powers along Ryan Trebon and Todd Wells were the only other riders able to match Johnson’s pace.

On the third lap Trebon attacked hard putting Johnson and Powers on the defensive. Johnson and Powers both appeared to be struggling as Wells and Trebon opened a 5-second gap on Johnson with Powers 15-seconds back.

Trebon made his race winning move on the fourth lap with an acceleration that opened up a 10-second lead on Wells. Trebon then piled on the pressure throughout the remainder of the race, increasing his lead all the way to the line.

Behind Trebon, Johnson made a last lap surge to pull within 15-seconds of Wells. Despite finishing third Johnson took home the overall series title, the first one of his career.

In the women’s race Katerina Nash repeated her victory in Saturday’s raced with a dominant ride in the final round.

Nash attacked hard on the first lap breaking the race apart and putting her teammate and series leader Georgia Gould on the defensive. At the end of the first lap Gould was in fourth position but slowly worked her way past Wendy Simms (Kona) and Sue Butler (Monavie Cannondale). Despite her effort Gould was never able to close within 5-seconds of Nash.

With her win, Nash captured her first series title in the USGP. With her second place finish Gould held onto second overall in the series.
