Jeremy Powers Takes Victory At Star Crossed
Under the bright lights of Marymoor Velodrome, Jeremy Powers of the cyclocrossworld.com / Cannondale Team won the cyclocross season opener with a powerful last lap attack on a wet and muddy course. Despite rumors to the contrary it does not rain everyday in Seattle. In Fact, until Saturday the emerald city had not seen rain in three weeks. That all changed just in time for the Full Speed Ahead Star Crossed race. Racers were welcomed to the Seattle area by a steady rain that started Friday night and continued throughout the day. By the time the Elite riders started the course had deteriorated into a mixture of deep mud and slick grassy corners.
Within the first lap a lead group of Ryan Trebon (Kona), Tim Johnson (cyclocrossworld.com / Cannondale), Jeremy Powers (cyclocrossworld.com / Cannondale), Adam Craig (Giant) and Barry Wick (Kona) had distanced themselves from the rest of the field. Throughout the first half of the race Johnson and Trebon took turns leading with Powers, Craig and Wick in toe. After a couple laps Wick dropped from the lead group after a crash. Halfway through the race Powers made a strong surge that gapped Craig and Johnson. While Craig was further delayed by a crash and was never able to get back on terms, Johnson bridged back and with Trebon opened a five second gap on Powers.
As the laps counted down Powers, Trebon and Johnson regrouped at the front of race. Johnson’s chance at victory slipped away as he crashed and required a bike change. Trebon and Powers entered the final lap together when Powers attacked. As Trebon gave chase he collided with a lapped rider, giving Powers the gap he needed to win. Unfortunately for Powers he didn’t have a chance to celebrate his victory. Due to confusion with the lap counter Powers was under the impression that he still had one lap remaining. Once Powers realized he had won he punched his fist in air and let out a triumphant scream.
