Belgian rider Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) won the third stage of the Tour of Spain on Monday, a 157.3 kilometer ride from Marbella to here and took the overall leader's red jersey.
The 28-year-old - a two-time winner of the prestigious Paris-Tours race broke clear in the final kilometers and came home 14 seconds clear of Spaniard Joaquin Rodriguez.
"The target was to win the stage so getting the overall leader's jersey is a bonus," said Gilbert, who won the Amstel Gold Classic earlier this season.
Previous overall leader British rider Mark Cavendish suffered in the hot conditions on a stage which included a first category climb and along with Luxembourg star Andy Schleck was left trailing by the peloton.
Stay tuned for full race report.
