Fabian Cancellara (Saxo Bank) fired a warning shot to his rivals with a week to go before the Tour of Flanders, by taking an impressive victory in the E3 Prijs Vlaanderen - Harelbeke. Cancellara broke free with an elite group that contained Tom Boonen (Quick Step) and Juan Antonio Flecha (Sky) on the Paterberg climb with 42-kilometers left to race. With 2-kilometers to go it appeared Boonen was set to take the race in a sprint finish, but Cancellara had other ideas. Just before 1-kilometer to go, Cancellara attacked hard before a left hand corner. Flecha who was riding second wheel lost contact and Boonen was unable to close the gap. A small gap was all Cancellara need to power clear to the line. In the sprint for second, Boonen easily out kicked Flecha.
