RACE REPORTS: PARIS-NICE STAGE SIX: TONDO SOLOS
March 13, 2010

Spaniard Xavier Tondo (Cervélo) won the sixth stage of the Paris-Nice on Saturday while compatriot Alberto Contador of Astana held onto the overall lead going into the final day. Contador has a 14-second lead over another Spaniard, Alejandro Valverde, after Tondo led the way into Tourrettes-sur-Loup in the longest stage of the event, a 220-kilometer ride from Peynier.

Tondo rode clear of an early breakaway with 39-kilometer remaining to hold off a charging peloton led by Valverde with a 5-second margin at the line. By finishing second Valverde gained sufficient bonus points to shave 6-seconds off his overnight deficit on Contador. Slovak Peter Sagan, a double stage winner, finished third.

"I set off looking to finish in the top ten overall in the Paris-Nice, but I made a bad mistake yesterday, so decided to go for stage wins," said Tondo. "To win I need to go it alone – I have no chance in a sprint."

Sunday's final stage is a 119-kilometer ride around Nice.
