RACE REPORTS: NATIONAL CYCLOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIPS U-23: SUMMERHILL STRIKES
Road Bike Action
December 12, 2009
Summerhill solos to the stars and stripes jersey
On a cold but sunny day, Danny Summerhill of the Felt-Holowesko Partners-Garmin team dominated the U-23 race at the National Cyclocross Championships in Bend, Oregon, to claim the stars and stripes jersey of national champion.
The race started fast as Summerhill, Chance Noble (California Giant Berry) and Luke Keough broke free on the first lap with Keough setting the early pace. On lap two Keough bobbled, allowing Noble and Summerhill to establish a gap. It was then Noble that set the pace, pulling himself and Summerhill clear. On the stair run up Summerhill stumbled and for a moment it looked like Noble might ride away. However, Summerhill turned on the power and quickly remade connect. Behind the leading duo the race was completely shattered with no organized chase group and large time gaps opening between riders.
Noble and Summerhill remained together with Summerhill setting the pace until the fifth of the race’s seven laps. With Noble struggling to hold the wheel of Summerhill, a small gap of a couple bike lengths opened between the two riders. As soon as Summerhill saw he had a gap he pinned it up a steep climb and Noble was unable to answer.

The final two laps of the race where a pure display of power as Summerhill continued to increase his lead all the way to the line. Noble was able to hold on for second, with Keough in third.
