With teammate Tom Boonen out of the 2008 Tour De France due to a out-of-competition positive test for cocaine fiasco, his 27 year old Quick.Step teammate Gert Steegmans has now stepped up with a solo win in the recent Halle-Ingooigem semi-classic to show he will be force to be reckoned himself in the upcoming Tour.
Steegmans attacked an escape group with 10km to go for the solo win, but the big Belgian fastman will be looking to battle it out head to head with the other sprinters at the Tour.
61st Halle-Ingooigem Belgium, June 25, 2008 1. Gert Steegmans (Bel) Quick Step / 198km 4h57'00" (40 km/hr avg. speed)
