Spain's Alejandro Valverde was on course to win the Vuelta a España after keeping his overall lead in Saturday's 20th and penultimate stage, a time-trial won by Britain's David Millar. Valverde finished in seventh position in the 27.8-kilometer time-trial in the central city of Toledo, 36-seconds behind Millar.
Barring disaster, Valverde, who has never won a major Tour, should take the event when it concludes in Madrid on Sunday at the end of the final stage, a 110-kilometer race between Rivas Vaciamadrid and the Spanish capital. Time trial specialist Millar won Saturday's stage in a time of 35:53 ahead of Spain's Samuel Sanchez, who is second overall, Australian Cadel Evans and Italy's Ivan Basso.
