RACE REPORTS: TOUR OF MISSOURI STAGE 6: CHICCHI STEALS THE STAGE
Road Bike Action
September 12, 2009
(Photo: Mitchell Clinton)
Francesco Chicchi (Liquigas) surprised the other sprinters by coming from behind and stealing the victory in stage six of the Tour of Missouri. Chicchi beat sprinter points leader Thor Hushovd (Cervélo) and Lucas Sebastian Haedo (Colavita/Sutter Home).
Stage six was the fastest Tour of Missouri stage ever due to consistent attacks. I took almost sixty kilometers before a break finally went clear. It was Jeremy Hunt (Cervélo) that finally broke free. Hunt was able to build a three minute gap at one point. Despite Hunt not being a threat for the overall, the teams of the sprinters gave chase and he was brought back with 28-kilometers remaining.
The peloton stayed together until the KOM with 11-kilometers to go. As the KOM approached Phillip Gaimon (Jelly Belly) and Frederique Robert (Quick Step) broke free. This resulted in a reaction from Team Type 1's Moises Aldape's who was defending his lead in that competition. The break was caught just before the line allowing Aldape to consolidate his lead.
The final kilometers saw a flurry of attacks as Cervélo and Columbia-HTC tried to lead out their sprinters. In the final run for the line Chicchi took them by surprise and launched his race winning attack down the right side of the road.
