Haedo gets his stage

With Mark Cavendish abandoning the Tour of Missouri due to illness, Juan Jose Haedo (Saxo Bank) was finally able to get his stage victory by taking a hard fought sprint ahead of Thor Hushovd (Cervélo). Due to his victory Haedo tied Hushovd on overall time and due to his two seconds and a third place finish, Haedo was awarded the overall race lead.
After an aggressive start a four man break made up of Bernard Van Ulden (Jelly Belly), Jeff Louder (BMC), Bradley White (OUCH p/b Maxxis) and Michael Creed (Team Type 1) gained just over three minutes. The breakaway stayed clear until 15-kilomters remaining when the Cervelo and Liguigas lead peloton finally closed the gap.
The stage featured two finishing circuits. On the first circuit Matt Wilson (Team Type 1) attacked hard but was quickly brought back my the Saxo Bank team. With Wilson back David Zabriskie (Garmin-Slipstream) made a move but with the race lead on the line the sprinters team reeled him in in time for Haedo and Hushovd to battle for the win. Coming into the finish, there was a short steep climb with 400-meters to go. This served a launching pad for Haedo who powered to the line ahead of Hushovd and Dario Cataldo (Quick Step)
