RACE REPORTS: TOUR OF MISSOURI STAGE 3: HUSHOVD THUNDERS TO OVERALL LEAD
Road Bike Action
September 9, 2009
(Photo: Mitchell Clinton)
Thor Hushovd of the Cervélo team finally got the best of Mark Cavendish in the third stage of the Tour of Missouri. Hushovd out kicked Juan Jose Haedo (Saxo Bank) and Dario Cataldo (Quick Step) as the Columbia-HTC team was unable to answer a wave of attacks in the final kilometers of the race. Overnight leader Mark Cavendish, lost the lead to Hushovd even though he is now equal on time with the Norwegian.
Like stage 2, the pace of the race was dictated by a three man break that spent most of the day off the front. The break was comprised of Michael Friedman and Will Frischkorn (Garmin-Slipstream) and Matthew Wilson (Team Type 1). The three riders worked well together throughout the stage until Frischkorn, suffering from the dreaded bonk, dropped off with 30-kilometers still remaining. Friedman and Wilson stayed away another 20-kilometers, but were brought back with 10-kilometers to go.
With just under three kilometers to go, David Zabriskie (Garmin-Slipstream) attacked and was followed by Michael Rogers (Columbia-HTC) and Levi Leipheimer (Astana). The move was quickly shut down by the Cervélo team. From there Columbia-HTC tried to setup Cavendish but in the run for the line the British sprinter could only manage fifth place behind Hushovd, Haedo, Cataldo and Daniel Oss (Liguigas).
