RACE REPORTS: TOUR OF MISSOURI STAGE 2: CAVENDISH AGAIN!
September 8, 2009

(Photo: Mitchell Clinton)

For the second day in a row, Mark Cavendish (Columbia-HTC) powered to victory in the Tour of Missouri. In winning the second stage, Cavendish extended his overall lead due to a ten second time bonus. Last year's defending champion Christian Vande Velde was forced to withdraw due to the broken hand he suffered yesterday.

The day saw several attacks and breakaway attempts, but it wasn't until Francois Parisien (Planet Energy), Timothy Duggan (Garmin-Slipstream) and Kiel Reijnen (Jelly Belly) got away that a breakaway was able to gain time on the peloton. They eventually built a gap of over four minutes but with Columbia-HTC, Saxo Back and Cervélo working to together to set it up for their sprinters the break was reeled in with 7-kilometers remaining.

In the final run for the line, The Kelly Benefits and OUCH p/b Maxxis teams made efforts to break the domination of the larger teams, but it was the Cervélo team that put Thor Hushovd on the front first. Unfortunately for Hushovd, Cavendish was right on his wheel and easily out kicked the Norwegian.
