RACE REPORTS: TOUR OF MISSOURI STAGE 1: CAVENDISH OF COURSE
Road Bike Action
September 7, 2009
Cavendish victorious in St. Louis
(Photo: Mitchell Clinton)
Mark Cavendish (Columbia-HTC) powered to a convincing win in the opening stage of the Tour of Missouri. Cavendish won the circuit race through the streets of St. Louis, ahead of Juan Jose Haedo (Saxo Bank) and Thor Hushovd (Cervélo).
The early pace of the race was set by a three man breakaway that contained Moises Aldape Chavez (Team Type 1), Tomas Vaitkus (Astana) and Chris Anker Sorensen (Team Saxo Bank) who spent 10-laps off the front. However with Cavendish eyeing the victory it was Columbia-HTC that picked up the pace and eventually closed the gap on the leading trio. With about a lap to go the entire peloton was back together for the finish.
As has been the case all season, Columbia-HTC led the charge for the line but with so many riders trying to make their mark on the race the lead out was disrupted and it became every man for himself. With 750 meters to go there was a crash in the peloton but it was far enough back not effect the sprint for the line. In the end, Cavendish again proved he is the fastest sprinter in the peloton and easily took the win.
