Spanish rider Joaquin Sobrino of the Burgos Monumental team won the first stage of the Tour of Castilla y Leon cycling race, in which American Lance Armstrong withdrew after suffering a fall. Sobrino covered the 176.3 kilometres between Paredes de Nava and Baltanas in 4 hours, 31 minutes, 12 seconds, the same time as second-placed David Vitoria of Switzerland.

Armstrong, who returned to competitive cycling this year after over three years in retirement, fell along with several other riders about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the finish line.

Spanish media said he is to undergo tests to determine if he has suffered a broken collarbone, which would throw into doubt his participation in this year's Giro d'Italia and Tour de France, in which he hopes to compete for a record eighth title.
