Australian sprinter Graeme Brown (Rabobank) has won Stage 1 of the 29th Vuelta Ciclista a la Región de Murcia, Brown sprinted home to victory ahead of Kiwi speedster Greg "Hendy" Henderson and Spanish rider Rubén Pérez (Euskaltel). Early on, a three man escape of local lad Pedro José Vera (Contentpolis-AMPO), José Antonio López Gil (Andalucía-Cajasur) and Marcos García Fernández (Xacobeo Galicia) made a bid for victory but were brought to heel by the sprinters teams before the finish.
