Late last summer, neo-pro Francesco Ginanni (Diquigiovanni Androni) lit
up the road of Italy with some big wins (Tre Valli Varesine and Giro
del Veneto) The exciting Ginanni is back again with a
big win at Trofeo Laigueglia, beating Katusha's Filippo Pozzato,
a two-time winner at Trofeo Laigueglia. On beautiful late winter
day on the Italian Riviera, the bearded Ginanni exclaimed "It was
a great win" said the 23 year old Tuscan speedster from Casalguidi. "To
win here in Laigueglia ahead of lots of big-name riders is great. I
worked really hard this winter and I think that today, I showed
everyone I am a real professional rider. I have to thank the entire
team, especially Davide (Rebellin) who put me in the right place to
win."

An early break of Oliver Kaisen (Silence-Lotto) and Maxim Belkov (Isd)
got a lead of up to eight minutes, but on the day's final ascent of the
Cima Paravenna, it was the assault of Diquigiovanni-Androni that
brought the break back with 33km to race. At the summit of Paravenna,
with 30km still to race, it was Michele Scarponi
(Diquigiovanni-Androni), fresh from some strong riding at the Ruta del
Sol this week who went over first with a 20" advantage of a selection
of 31 riders behind. Scarponi's brilliant move put the pressure on the
rest of the chasing gruppo and he resisted the chasing onslaught of
Team Barloword and ISD until 750 meters to go. This played perfectly
into the hands of his Diquigiovanni-Androni teammates Rebellin and
Ginanni. The rode perfectly in the finale, waiting for just the right
moment when Ginanni came of Barloword's Steve Cummings wheel for the
win with 200m. to go, holding off the fast but frustrated Filippo
Pozzato for Diquigiovanni-Androni’s 11th win so far in 2009.
