Already on the podium at GP Costa degli Etruschi, South African
speedster Robert Hunter (Barloworld) won Stage 4 of the Tour of the
Mediterranean Friday, a 135km stage between Greasque and Bouc-Bel-Air.
Despite not being invited to the Tour Of California, the in-form Hunter
sprinted home ahead of Spaniard Luis Leon Sanchez (Caisse d'Epargne)
who regained the overall lead of the Tour of the Mediterranean, and
Finland's Jussi Veikkanen, of Francaise des Jeux.
Hunter, who had problems in the first stage between Beziers and
Narbonne when Belarussian Yauheni Hutarovich won the stage, came home
victorious in Bouc-Bel-Air. It was a hard-fought stage with eight
riders getting away from the peloton on the 21km mark, including
Hunter, his teammate Cardenas and Leon Sanchez, while five other riders
later bridged up to the break. The escape of 13 continued to gained
time and were eventually seven minutes ahead at the midpoint though the
peloton stepped things up later in the stage to bring back some riders
while eight eventually stayed ahead until the finish.
