Holland’s Marianne Vos out sprinted Germany’s Hanka Kupfernagel and American Katie Compton on Sunday in Hoogerheide, Netherlands to take her second Cyclocross world title.
Due the cold temperatures, the Hoogerheide course remained frozen and fast for the women's race. The 40-minute race saw the pre race favorites move to the front early, with American Katie Compton setting the early pace and building a 17 second lead. Within a lap-and-half, the American had a solid gap advantage over Kupfernagel, Vos and French rider Ferrier-Bruneau.
Compton pushed hard but was unable to shake Kupfernagel and Vos (Photo: Roberto Bettini) As Compton continued to ride solo, Kupfernagel lead the chase group and eventually pulled herself and Vos back to Compton. Kupfernagel stayed aggressive and was able to gain a small advantage over Compton on a couple sections. Compton was able to respond and clawed her way back each time, never allowing Kupfernagel to gain more than a handful of seconds and countered each move with a surge of her own.
With Compton and Kupfernagel battling each other Vos was able to get a free ride to the finish. With 200 meters to go Vos made her move, easily out sprinting Kupfernagel and Compton.
After the race Compton didn’t seem too disappointed with third, saying “Sure, it’s frustrating, but it was a good ride. It’s been a good year and the bronze is nothing to be too disappointed with. There were tactics, but I rode a good race.”
Besides Compton, American Rachel Lloyd finished 32 seconds back while Georgia Gould was at 1:02. Sue Butler was at 2:04 and Laura Van Gilder was at 2:57.
