LATEST NEWS: SPANISH COURTS DENY WADA, UCI APPEAL

Spanish Courts Deny WADA, UCI Appeal
The Provincial Court of Madrid has denied appeals by the World Anti-Doping Authority (WADA) and Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), as well as the Spanish Cycling Federation (RFEC), essentially closing the case. The appeals were a request to turn over samples of blood bags, blood bags and bags of packed red blood cells seized in Operacion Puerto to those agencies for analysis.

This may be the final word in Opercion Puerto. If so, it would mean that the raid was largely for naught as most of the cyclists believed to be involved in the doping ring will evade prosecution. Puerto is thought to be the largest doping raid against sport in history with athletes from three different sports accused of using Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes’ clinic for the purpose of doping.

Giro Organizers Talk 2012 US Start
Giro d'Italia race director Angelo Zomegnan met Thursday with Washington mayor Adrian Fenty about possibly starting the cycling classic in the US capital in 2012, the New York Times reported Friday. Fenty did not strike a firm deal for the annual May affair to open in Washington but the meeting was called a success and Mark Sommers, a lawyer heading the group trying to lure the event, said a tentative deal was reached.

"We can't say it will 100 percent start here but we think that it is very, very possible and we're moving forward to work together," Zomegnan told the Times. "There are a lot of things that must happen in the next few weeks before we can say it's 100-percent. But I think it looks good."

Sommers said the deal would see the prologue and first stage of the race conducted entirely within the US capital.

Fenty, an avid bicycle rider, received a pink jersey. "I believe it would be one of the most fabulous events ever to happen in Washington from an athletic discipline standpoint," said Fenty, whose grandmother is from the suburbs of Rome.

Evans Confirms Tour Down Under Start
Australia's road world cycling champion Cadel Evans has confirmed he will race in January's Tour Down Under in South Australia with his new team, BMC Racing. BMC Racing also announced on Friday that US cyclist George Hincapie would compete alongside Evans.

Race director Mike Turtur said the return of two-time Tour de France runner-up Evans to race in Australia was a huge boost to the event. "It is great for the race and for Australian cycling fans that Cadel will be returning to ride at the Tour Down Under," Turtur said. "Evans brings a wealth of experience in the grand tours to his new team and now as world champion he'll be primed and ready for the
challenges of the 2010 cycling season."

Hincapie, a long time teammate of Lance Armstrong, will be returning to South Australia for his second appearance in the tour. "George Hincapie is one of the most recognised riders in the world, with Tour de France stage wins, national championships and professional victories to his credit," Turtur said.
